Flåm, Norway, is a breathtakingly beautiful destination nestled in the heart of the Aurlandsfjord. Known for its dramatic landscapes, serene fjord waters, and charming village vibes, Flåm is a must-visit on any Norwegian cruise itinerary. While the village itself is small, it offers some of the most unforgettable excursions Norway has to offer. If your cruise stops in Flåm, here are five top-rated excursions to make the most of your visit.

Ride the Flåm Railway

The Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) is often considered one of the most scenic train journeys in the world, and for good reason. This 20-kilometre route takes you from Flåm to Myrdal, climbing nearly 900 metres through stunning landscapes. Expect dramatic waterfalls, steep mountains, and picturesque valleys at every turn.

One of the highlights of the journey is the stop at Kjosfossen waterfall, where you can step off the train and marvel at the cascading water. The train ride takes about an hour each way, making it a perfect half-day excursion.

Tip: Book your tickets in advance, as this excursion is extremely popular with both cruise passengers and independent travellers.

Fjord Safari by RIB Boat

For an adrenaline-filled way to explore the fjord, hop on a RIB (rigid inflatable boat) safari. This guided tour takes you through the Aurlandsfjord and into the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord, offering up-close views of towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and perhaps even some local wildlife like seals or porpoises.

The RIB safari is an exhilarating way to experience the fjords, giving you a sense of their grandeur and tranquillity at the same time. Tours usually last around 2 hours and include a knowledgeable guide who will share fascinating stories about the area’s history and nature.

Stegastein Viewpoint

Just a short drive from Flåm, the Stegastein Viewpoint offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views in Norway. Perched 650 metres above the Aurlandsfjord, this viewing platform juts out from the mountainside, providing unobstructed views of the fjord and surrounding landscapes.

You can reach Stegastein by joining a guided bus tour or driving yourself if you’ve rented a car. The viewpoint is particularly stunning at sunrise or sunset, so consider timing your visit accordingly.

Tip: Combine your visit to Stegastein with a scenic drive along the Snow Road (Aurlandsvegen) for even more jaw-dropping vistas.

Hike to Brekkefossen Waterfall

For those who love hiking, the trail to Brekkefossen waterfall is a must-do. The hike begins near Flåm village and takes you through lush meadows and forested paths before reaching a viewpoint overlooking the powerful waterfall. Along the way, you’ll also enjoy sweeping views of Flåm and the surrounding fjords.

The hike is relatively short but steep, taking about 1-2 hours round-trip. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring water, as the ascent can be challenging. The effort is well worth it, though, as the views from the top are simply unforgettable.

Cruise the Nærøyfjord

No visit to Flåm is complete without a cruise through the Nærøyfjord, one of the narrowest fjords in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fjord’s steep cliffs, vibrant green forests, and cascading waterfalls create a magical atmosphere that’s best experienced from the water.

Many tour operators offer fjord cruises departing from Flåm, ranging from traditional sightseeing boats to electric vessels for an eco-friendly experience. Some cruises also include a return journey on the Flåm Railway, allowing you to see the fjord from multiple perspectives.

Flåm is a small village with big adventures waiting to be discovered. Whether you’re exploring the fjords by boat, hiking to waterfalls, or soaking in panoramic views, there’s something here for everyone. Remember, booking your excursions independently can often save you money while still offering unforgettable experiences.
