When we first cruised with Virgin Voyages, we had no idea what a “Grog Walk” was. We saw it pop up in the app, thought the name sounded a bit cheeky, and decided to give it a go. At $50 per person when we first did it, we weren’t sure what to expect – but it turned out to be one of the most fun things we’ve ever done on board.

If you’re curious about it, here’s what actually happens on a Virgin Voyages Grog Walk.

How it starts

For our Grog Walk everyone met up at The Loose Cannon, one of the ship’s quirkiest bars. On arrival, you’re handed a masquerade mask with your name written on it – which already sets the tone that this is going to be a bit different. The host greets you with some nibbles (popcorn and pretzels for us) and explains how it all works.

Pretzel with cheese dip on a plate, popcorn in a striped bag, and a silver mask labeled "GEORGIE" on a wooden table.

The idea is simple: at each bar stop, you’re given a card with a little task. Complete the task, show the host, and you get your drink. Usually, it’s a cocktail.

The tasks

We don’t want to spoil everything, because half the fun is not knowing what’s coming, but here are a couple of examples from our own experience:

Dan’s first card was “Find a stranger with the same colour eyes as you.” Not a bad one to start with. He was nervous at first (Dan has a lot of social anxiety) but luckily this was easy to do. He found someone, introduced himself, and went up with them to the host to collect his drink.

Georgie, on the other hand, pulled “Find a stranger and make up a secret handshake with them.” A bit more involved, but once the awkwardness was out of the way it turned into a laugh – and yes, it earned him his drink.

Every stop is a new task, a new drink, and a new chance to meet people. It really does break the ice in ways you wouldn’t manage just wandering into a bar on your own.

The drinks

At each stop, you’re rewarded with a drink – normally a cocktail – which keeps the energy flowing and helps smooth over any nerves about the tasks. The drinks themselves are good quality too, and each bar offers something different, so you get a little tour of Virgin’s nightlife as well.

The vibe

It’s fun, a bit silly, and very Virgin Voyages. The mix of playful challenges, alcohol, and the social atmosphere makes it feel like a grown-up version of a treasure hunt. You’ll meet fellow Sailors, have a few laughs, and by the time you’re on your last cocktail you’ll probably have a handful of new cruise mates.

Our walk ended at the Pyjama Party, which was the perfect finale – a big, lively event where everyone was already warmed up and in the mood to carry on the night.

How to book

You can’t book the Grog Walk before you sail. It opens up in the Virgin Voyages app once you’re on board. Just keep an eye on the “Events & Activities” section and reserve your spot as soon as it appears. Spaces are limited, and it does sell out quickly.

Is it worth it?

We’d say yes. At $50 per person when we first did it, it felt good value considering you get several cocktails and a hosted activity that lasts a couple of hours. But more than that, it’s a memory-making event. If you’re someone who enjoys a drink and is open to meeting new people, you’ll love it.

The Grog Walk is quirky, sociable, and something you’ll only find on Virgin Voyages. We had no idea what it was on our first sailing, but now it’s something we’d happily book again. If you spot it on your itinerary – grab a place early, because it does sell out.

Happy sailing!
