We’ve received numerous requests for advice on the best locations to propose during a Norwegian fjords cruise, and having seen some truly magical and successful moments ourselves, we’re delighted to share our top picks. Thinking of popping the question on your cruise? Here are the most romantic spots in Stavanger, Olden, Hellesylt, Ålesund, Flåm and Bergen - plus our choices for the most private and the most spectacular places to propose.

There’s something undeniably enchanting about gliding through the Norwegian fjords. Towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls and tranquil villages create the perfect fairytale backdrop. Whether you’re after sweeping panoramas, secluded hideaways or a cinematic moment you’ll never forget, we’ve explored each port to bring you the very best proposal spots.

Stavanger – Colourful Charm in Gamle Stavanger

Stavanger’s old town, Gamle Stavanger, is full of cobbled lanes and perfectly preserved white wooden houses. It’s romantic, quiet, and absolutely photogenic. Wander the streets together and find a tucked-away bench or secluded corner to pop the question. Afterwards, head to one of the waterside cafes for a celebratory drink.

Tip: Avoid the cruise rush by going early in the morning or late afternoon when the streets are calmer.

For a unique and meaningful proposal spot in Stavanger, head to Sverd i fjell - the iconic monument of three giant swords embedded in the rock overlooking Hafrsfjord. This striking location symbolises peace and unity, making it a powerful place to begin your next chapter together. Set against a scenic fjord backdrop, it offers a dramatic yet peaceful setting, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when it’s quieter. It’s a spot full of history, symbolism and natural beauty - ideal for a proposal that’s both memorable and a little out of the ordinary.

Olden – Lakeside Serenity at Loen or the Breathtaking Views from Mount Hoven

If you’re docking in Olden, head to Loen Lake - one of the most serene and jaw-dropping spots in the region. The emerald-green water, framed by steep cliffs and waterfalls, is pure proposal material. You can take a walk along the lake, rent a rowing boat, or just stop by the edge and soak it all in.

For a truly unforgettable moment, take the Loen Skylift from the village of Loen up to the top of Mount Hoven. In just five minutes, you’ll ascend over 1,000 metres to breathtaking panoramic views of the Nordfjord, surrounding mountains and valleys below. It’s one of the most spectacular proposal backdrops in all of Norway. For the quietest experience, it’s best to go as early in the morning as possible - you’ll avoid the cruise ship crowds and may even have the viewing platforms to yourselves. There’s a café at the top if you fancy a celebratory drink afterwards, or take a gentle stroll along one of the mountain trails to find your perfect moment.

Alternatively, for a quieter and equally stunning proposal spot, head to the jetty or pontoon just a short walk from the port. After disembarking in Olden, turn right and follow the Fv60 road past the small marina. Continue walking until you reach the car park - from there, you’ll spot the jetty extending out into the water (see map below). It offers incredible views of the fjord and surrounding mountains, making it a peaceful and picturesque setting to pop the question.

Hellesylt – Waterfalls and Wilderness

Hellesylt is small but packed with natural beauty. The Hellesylt Waterfall cascades right through the heart of the village - a roaring, photogenic backdrop for a bold proposal. But if you’re after something quieter, a short walk out of the village gives you uninterrupted views of the fjord and surrounding mountains.

Top pick: There’s a peaceful spot just past the main waterfall where the view opens up and you’ll likely have it all to yourselves.

Ålesund – City Views from Mount Aksla

Ålesund is one of Norway’s prettiest cities, thanks to its art nouveau architecture and sea-meets-mountain landscape. Climb the 418 steps up Mount Aksla (or take the tourist train if you’re feeling less energetic) for panoramic views across the town, islands and fjords. There’s a quiet lookout spot just a little further on from the main terrace, ideal for a romantic proposal away from the crowds.

Bonus: If your cruise departs late the city looks stunning at sunset, with golden light reflecting off the water.

Flåm – Propose on a Scenic Railway Adventure

The Flåm Railway is one of the world’s most beautiful train journeys - and a surprisingly romantic place to propose. Whether it’s while riding past the waterfalls and valleys, or stepping off for a moment at Kjosfossen Waterfall, there are endless backdrops to choose from.

More private: Head out on a RIB boat fjord safari from Flåm and propose surrounded by still water and towering cliffs - dramatic and unforgettable.

Bergen – Romance on Mount Fløyen

Bergen is bursting with charm, from the colourful Bryggen wharf to its surrounding mountains. The Fløibanen funicular takes you up to Mount Fløyen, where you’ll find incredible views and quiet forest trails. Take a short walk away from the viewpoint to find a secluded spot with a fjord view - perfect for a low-key, heartfelt proposal.

Tip: Go early or around sunset for softer light and fewer crowds.

Most Private Spot to Propose

For a truly intimate and unforgettable proposal, consider booking a private RIB boat safari from Hellesylt and heading out into the Geirangerfjord. One of the most breathtaking spots to propose along the route is in front of the legendary Seven Sisters waterfalls, where the dramatic cascade of water and towering cliffs create a cinematic backdrop. To make this moment your own, you’ll need to hire the entire boat privately, as shared tours won’t allow for the same privacy. Be sure to speak directly with the RIB company in advance to confirm that proposals are permitted and to arrange the best timing and location for your special moment.

Most Spectacular Backdrop

If you’re after that jaw-dropping, cinematic proposal moment, the top of Mount Hoven in Olden ticks every box. Reached via the spectacular Loen Skylift, this mountaintop location offers a dramatic and unforgettable setting that feels almost otherworldly. You’ll feel like you’re on top of the world, with 360-degree views of fjords, snow-capped peaks, glacial valleys and lush green landscapes stretching out beneath you. It’s a place where words often fall short - and where a proposal feels like pure magic. For the most peaceful experience, aim to arrive early before the crowds, giving you the best chance of sharing this incredible moment in near solitude.

Final Tips

  • Let your cruise line or ship concierge know - they might be able to help with a photographer or special moment.

  • Always have a backup plan in case of rain (this is Norway, after all!).

  • Keep the ring safe - either wear it securely or stash it in your cabin until you’re ready.
