If you’re gearing up for a voyage with Virgin Voyages, here’s something you’ll want to know before you sail. The cruise line has recently introduced a redesigned, fully updated app - and if you still have the old one, it’s time to make the switch. In this blog we’ll walk you through what’s changed, how to use the new version effectively, and why it matters for your next cruise.

What’s changed with the Virgin Voyages app

The “Original Sailor App” is being retired

Virgin Voyages has confirmed that the older app - known as the “Original Sailor App” - will soon be unsupported. Sailors are being urged to download the rebuilt app version ahead of their voyage.   The change isn’t just cosmetic: it’s a behind‑the‑scenes overhaul aimed at improving stability and performance.

What the new app offers

The new Virgin Voyages app (released for Android as version 2.0 and enhanced for iOS) brings a redesigned home screen, smoother navigation, and improved booking features.   You’ll still manage your cabin key (The Band), bookings for dining and shore‑excursions, and more - but on a more reliable platform.

Key features to check before you sail

  • Download and log in early - Make sure you install the new app and log into your account ahead of embarkation so you’re ready.

  • Familiarise with the layout - The home screen now features a clearer voyage countdown, easier access to “Happenings” (events) and “Shore Things”.

  • Check The Band connection - Your Band still functions as cabin key, wallet and bar‑tab link, but the pairing experience is optimised in the new app.

  • Be aware of some missing features (for now) - For example, room‑service ordering via the app (Ship Eats) is still not fully in place and is currently handled via cabin tablets.

Why this matters for your cruise experience

Smooth embarkation and less frustration

Arriving on board and finding your app misbehaving or unsupported is one of those avoidable stressors. With the switch done ahead of time you’ll spend less time fumbling with tech and more time enjoying your voyage.

Better planning on shore days

The app helps you book shore excursions (“Shore Things”) and dining venues in advance. If the platform is more responsive, you’re less likely to miss the booking window for a popular restaurant or off‑site tour.

On‑board convenience at your fingertips

From checking menus and making reservations to your bar tab and cabin key access (via The Band) the app helps pull together several key services. A more stable app just means fewer hiccups while you’re flipping between beaches, bars and theatres.

Top tips for using the app like a pro

1. Install the app as soon as you book

Once you’ve secured your voyage, find the app (iOS or Android) and sign in. That gives you time to familiarise yourself and check The Band pairing is working well.

2. Book dining and Shore Things early

When dining reservations open (often 60 days before sailing for premium fare types) use the app to secure your preferred restaurants. The smoother app experience means faster responsiveness.

3. Use push notifications smartly but review them

Enable alerts for booking windows and reminders, but also manually check the “Happenings” section for extras like pop‑up events, guest lectures or themed nights.

4. Test the connection once onboard

When you board your ship - whether it’s Brilliant Lady, Valiant Lady or one of her sisters - open the app, check The Band works for your cabin door and bar tab, and check you can see upcoming events.

5. Don’t rely on the old app

If you still have the old “Original Sailor App” installed, uninstall or disable it. Continuing to use it may lead to issues or unsupported features. Virgin Voyages have warned users it will shortly be phased out.

Final thoughts

Switching over to the new app before you sail means less tech stress and more holiday enjoyment. It’s a small task ahead of your voyage that offers real benefits on board. Get the app sorted early, explore its features, and you’ll be ready to make the most of your time at sea.
