When we set off on our very first MSC Cruise, we thought we knew what to expect. After all, a cruise is a cruise, right? Well, not exactly! MSC has its own unique way of doing things. Looking back, there are definitely a few things we wish we had known beforehand.
If you’re about to board your first MSC ship, we’d love to share some insights to help you cruise smarter and enjoy every moment.
1. MSC Cruises Feel Very European
MSC is proudly European. You’ll notice it right away — from the food to the entertainment styles. Expect announcements in multiple languages and Mediterranean-style dining. This relaxed approach creates a different atmosphere compared to British or American lines. Once we embraced it, we found it added to the fun!
Tip: Brush up on a few polite words in Italian, Spanish, or French. The crew really appreciates it!
2. Drinks Packages Work Differently
MSC’s drinks packages can be a bit confusing. They are tiered, with some drinks included and others not, depending on your package. We thought cocktails would be free… but not quite!

Tip: Check the drinks menus before you sail. Consider upgrading your package if you enjoy branded spirits and cocktails.
3. Gratuities and Service Charges Work Differently
On MSC Cruises sailings from the UK, gratuities are included in your cruise fare. This is great news for budgeting! MSC recommends not tipping individual staff. However, they automatically add a service charge to all bar purchases.
If you’re cruising in regions like Europe or the Far East, the bar service charge is 15%. In North America, it rises to 18%. We learned this the hard way, as bar bills add up quickly!
Tip: Keep the service charge in mind when ordering drinks. A drinks package might be worth considering if you plan to enjoy cocktails or coffee daily.
4. You’ll Need to Book Shows and Activities
On MSC’s larger ships, the shows are spectacular. You usually have to book your seats in advance, either via the app or kiosks onboard. We missed an exciting show simply because we didn’t know this!

Tip: Download the MSC for Me app before you travel. It’s excellent for planning and booking activities.
5. Formal Nights Are Less Formal
If you’re used to British lines where formal night means black tie and ballgowns, MSC offers a more relaxed approach. Some guests go all out, while others dress smart casual.
Tip: Bring a nice outfit or two if you want to join in, but don’t stress. You won’t feel out of place either way.
6. The Buffet Has Odd Opening Times
Unlike other cruise lines, MSC’s buffet isn’t open 24/7. There are gaps between meal times when it can be hard to find a snack. We definitely got caught out a couple of times!
Tip: Check the daily programme and plan your meal and snack times around it.
7. The Yacht Club Is a Ship-Within-a-Ship
We didn’t realize how special MSC’s Yacht Club was until we experienced it. It’s a private, luxurious area featuring its own restaurant, lounge, and pool. Honestly, it’s amazing!

Tip: Even if you don’t book the Yacht Club this time, consider it for a future cruise if you want to treat yourself.
8. You Need to Book Speciality Restaurants Early
MSC’s speciality restaurants — like Butcher’s Cut, Hola! Tacos, and Kaito Sushi — are popular. We assumed we could just wander in whenever we wanted, but slots filled up fast!

Tip: If there’s a restaurant you want to try, book it as soon as you get onboard or even before your cruise if possible. Some packages offer savings for pre-booking dining experiences.
9. Embarkation Feels Different
Embarkation with MSC is efficient but more DIY compared to some other lines. You’ll need to navigate a few steps yourself, and it can feel hectic at times.
Tip: Keep all your paperwork handy. Check your luggage tags and just go with the flow. Once you’re onboard, it’s smooth sailing.
10. The Value for Money Is Fantastic
Despite a few quirks, MSC offers great value for money. We paid much less for our MSC cruise than we would have on other lines, and still had a fantastic experience with beautiful ships, lively entertainment, and plenty to do.
Tip: Keep an eye out for promotions. MSC often offers free drinks packages or reduced fares, making it even better value.
MSC Cruises might not be what you’re used to — but that is part of the adventure. Approach it with an open mind, a sense of fun, and a bit of flexibility. You’ll have an amazing time. We’re already planning our next one!
